Polymer Crystals - Sunflower Type Morphology

These are the images of poly-amide crystals grown from solution. Crystals are seen under optical microscope (lower resolution) and Scanning electron Microscope (Higher resolution). These images are an artistic capture of polymer crystals which conveys the message: “nature loves symmetry and beauty”.

Pac-Man (Alveolar Macrophage) Eats Green Beads (60 nm FITC Doped Silica Nanoparticles)

These images of rat alveolar macrophages exposed to FITC doped silica nanoparticles were captured in a series through the z-plane using a laser scanning confocal microscope (Olympus). The fluorescent silica particles are packaged into phagosomes, which are distributed throughout the cell, showing that the macrophage is reaching capacity. At a certain concentration, the capacity of the macrophages to ingest particles will be overwhelmed, and their ability to remove foreign matter from the airways will be compromised.

OPGaAs Wabi-Sabi

This defect cluster in orientation-patterned gallium arsenide (OPGaAs) is a perfect example of wabi-sabi (侘寂), the Japanese aesthetic of imperfection. While of no practical use, this defective sample still possesses a beauty of its own.

MAV PIV Wall Effects

A PIV laser illuminates the Night Vapor RC aircraft beautifully as it passes through the laser sheet. Processing this type of raw PIV image makes it possible to visualize the wingtip vortex of the aircraft as it flies in close proximity to a wall seen on the left side of the image.

Macrophage Nebula

A single confocal microscopic image of the interior of a human macrophage cell with pseudocolor representation of various cell features reveals a natural complexity that rivals complexity of cosmological nebula.
